What are neurodevelopmental disorders?
Neurodevelopmental disorders are a group of disorders that refer to the impairments of the development and growth of the brain or central nervous system. These brain deficits can affect an individual’s memory, emotions, ability to learn and maintain self-control. Neurodevelopmental disorders typically show up early in a child’s development and can run throughout the individual’s lifetime.
Several factors can cause neurodevelopmental disorders, such as genetic disorders, deprivation, immune dysfunction, metabolic disorders, infectious diseases, and physical trauma.
What are considered as neurodevelopmental disorders?
As set out in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition (DSM-5), the following are considered as neurodevelopmental disorders:
